Spectacular Great Staging of the siege of Malbork castle
The Siege of Malbork is one of the most significant open air events in Pomorskie Voivodeship. It is rooted in the rich history of the region. Every July, for three days, the Teutonic Order's castle in Malbork is ruled by the medieval knights. The main part of the event is Great Staging presenting defense of the castle. The siege, which took place just after the Tannenberg battle was victorious for the Teutonic Order knights, who successfully defended the castle against the Polish - Lithuanian army. This spectacular staging is performed by over 350 knights, who use horses, operational cannons replicas, war machines and specially constructed movable siege tower. This event attracts over 120 thousand viewers from Poland and abroad. There are many other attractions waiting for guests of the happening. Specially constructed knight's camp invites everyone who wants to feel like a medieval warrior or his lady. Under the guidance of middle ages enthusiasts visitors can prepare a meal, repair clothes, conserve the knight's equipment or take part in numerous plebeian games and competitions. There are also horse and foot demonstrations. What is more, viewers can admire many duels fought by knights. The Siege of Malbork is accompanied by the international and multicultural fair of medieval crafts. There is also a fair of diversities where on the stylized stalls exhibitors from Poland and abroad present their workshops and articles.
In 2005 Polish Tourism Organization granted the "Touristic Product of the Year" certificate to the hosts of this significant event.
Shakespear Festival in Gdańsk
Shakespeare Festival is an international periodic theatrical event, organised every year during the first week of August in Gdańsk and the whole Tri-city. The event aims at presenting and promoting the great English playwright's works. Each year, the hosts set out to present the most interesting performances from Poland and abroad. Theatre performances are accompanied by meetings with their makers: directors, actors, and dramatists, as well as an eventful educational programme called "The Summer Shakespeare Academy" (theatre and art workshops, lectures, exhibitions, seminars). Fostering the exchange of ideas, the festival naturally becomes a meeting space for artists and culture animators from across the world. The organizers' goal is to make Shakespeare Festival one of the most important international theatre festivals in Europe. Until 2009, there had been 13 editions of the event, featuring about 70 theatre groups from 30 countries. In the recent season we had the pleasure of welcoming the great Peter Brook's realisation, as well as Wooster Group - the legendary American artist team led by Elizabeth LeCompte. For the first time we hosted in Gdańsk a performance by the well-known German Bremer Shakespeare Company which was highly acclaimed by the audience and theatre critics. Since 2008, the festival has been organised by Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre and Theatrum Gedanense Foundation.
