Update: 2010-07-05
What happened in Pomerania in 2009? What surprised us and
what disappointed? What can we be proud of and what should we be
ashamed of? We made a review of, in our opinion, the most important
economic events of the last twelve moths in Pomorskie
Voivodeship.
The fee for driving comfort
At the beginning of January 2009 free driving on A1 motorway finished. Drivers had to pay 12,50 PLN for the 90 km section between Rusocin and Nowe Marzy. In June 2009 the fee was increased to 17,50 PLN. At present only buses and vehicles and vehicle groups with a maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tones, if they have a valid vignette, are exempted from charges.
Gdynia - the Silicon Valley of Pomerania
In March 2009 international CeBIT exhibition took place in Hannover. It is one of the most prestige meetings of IT sector representatives. During the exhibition the newest IT and communication solutions dedicated for business and home usage are presented. During this year's edition entrepreneurs from Gdynia formed one-third of polish representation. The Pomeranian region presented the speech simulator - Ivona, a flexible screen (called also an electronic paper) - used, among others, for securing the credit cards and E-mail Processor - an application that can recognize the users emotions such as impatience or annoyance.
Dream of polish TGV
In 2009 the reconstruction of the 28 km section of railway between Szymankowo and Pruszcz Gdański stations started. Works include the modernization of the railway bridge over the River Vistula. The route is part of the E65 railway line connecting Gdynia and Warsaw. Completion of renovation is planned for December 2010. The work will refer to the entire surface of track and everything beneath them - such as dehydration and a layer of crushed stone. All platforms and stations, including those in Tczew and Pszczolki are to be upgraded. Signaling installations are also to be replaced. Initially, the project contractor asserted that after the renovation of route E65, the journey time from the Tri-City to the capital will be reduced to 3 hours (currently it takes approximately 5 hours, assuming that there are no delays). Hoping for positive change, passengers traveling on the route Malbork-Tri-City has patiently tolerated the inconveniences resulting from the repair for over the year now. Currently, journey from the main station of Gdańsk to Tczew takes about an hour (before repairs the journey from Gdynia Central Station took similar time). Additional "attractions" during the journey are the notorious delays of trains, a few-minute-stops at Pruszcz Gdanski and Pszczolki stations, and a much longer journey through Lisewski Bridge on the River Vistula. To "increase" the comfort of the journey, at the end of the year Polish Rail withdrew part of regional connections and additionally raised prices of the tickets.
"Gold" again
Once again, Forbes recognized the Tri-City. For the second time, Gdynia won the Forbes ranking of the most attractive city for business. In the category of cities to 300 thousand residents it can boast the biggest number of new companies. Gdańsk took the sixth place in the same category among the 10 largest cities in Poland.
Gdańsk "discovered" by National Geographic
In June, Gdańsk appeared on the cover of National Geographic UK. This over a thousand years old city received the name of " flickering pearl of the Baltic". The article urged Britons to visit the Tri-City in the summer. As the biggest attractions of the place National Geographic recognized international events (including the Shakespeare Festival, Saint Dominic's Fair and a street theater festival FETA), monuments (for example: St. Mary's Basilica) and a unique "Roads to Freedom" exhibition.
Don't you regret Knight?
In August, after two unsuccessful attempts to sell the castle hill in Gniew, an investor wishing to change the medieval fortress in a hotel and conference centre appeared. Polmlek company has paid a deposit and definitive agreement with local authorities of the city was completed in September. I realize that the sale of the Gniew Castle may be perceived by some residents as a great loss. This Teutonic fortress was regarded by many as "our castle", which is now placed in the hands of a private owner, but the city does not have adequate means for maintenance of the facility - explains Bogdan Badziąg mayor of Gniew.
Tri-City drivers' dream
In October, construction on the South Ring Road of the City of Gdansk (POG) began. Constructing a new route will lead to a merger of an existing Tri-City Bypass with national road S7. In addition, with the planned merger of the routes Sucharski and POG, the issue of distribution of cargo stored at the Port of Gdansk will be resolved. What is more, the construction of Southern Bypass will facilitate connection with Gdansk airport in Rębiechowo.
Largest container ships of Maersk Lines will come to Gdańsk
The largest container operator in the world Maersk Line has announced that it intends to include Gdańsk to its container service AE10, which connects the ports of Southeast Asia and China with European ports. This is the first service of this type in Poland. It will be operated by the operator's largest vessels with a capacity up to 8000 TEUs. Arrival of the first ocean vessel to the Polish port is scheduled for the 4th of January 2010, and departure for the 6th of January. Maersk Line sees Poland and the Baltic States as a region with great potential for growth and perspective market for container transport. The first vessel folding to Gdańsk - Maersk Taikung, we expect around 700 - 1000 TEUs. There is a diverse cargo on board of the ship, which is a subject of Polish import - comments Peter H. Nielsen, Managing Director of Maersk Eastern Central Europe.
Globe Forum
The first out of Sweden edition of Globe forum took place in Gdańsk on 28th - 29th of October 2009. The aim of the meetings, which have been organized in Stockholm since 2003, is creating a field for discussion concerning sustainable economy development, future global trends, innovations in the economy and innovative approach to energy production. The Globe Forum in Gdańsk is supposed to become a periodic international event. Over 1250 guests participated in the first polish edition of the Globe Forum. Representatives of local authorities, business, universities, non-government organizations and politicians visited the conference. "Business Innovation for Sustainable Growth" was the watchword of this year's meeting. Advanced technologies and innovation are the bridge between ecology and economics. Gdansk Globe Forum, bringing together these three areas is a tremendous opportunity for the whole region, because it inserts the attitude of environmental responsibility into the economic framework - commented the event Globe Forum's guest of honor - professor Jerzy Buzek.
First in Europe
Weyerhaeuser Company announced on October the 30th , that it intends to build a new pulp processing plant in Poland. This is one of the largest investments this year across the country. After close investigation of space availability, the company chose Gdańsk, which competed with Kutno to the very last minute. The success of Gdansk was decided by the inclusion of investment area to Pomeranian Special Economic Zone, as well as, important for Weyerhaeuser, railway siding and close access to the Baltic Sea. Investment in Poland will be the first Weyerhaeuser's factory producing cellulose outside North America.
35 mln for a name
In December, we got a new name for the Baltic Arena. PGE Polish Power Corporation will pay 35 million PLN for naming the stadium PGE Arena Gdańsk. The agreement was concluded for 5 years. The sum offered by PGE will provide approximately 60% of five-year maintenance of the facility. The agreement provides that the first money of 5.2 million PLN will appear already in 2010 - before the construction is finished and put into operation. The remaining amount will be paid for another 4 years in installments of approximately 7.4 million PLN.
Shipyards' odyssey
The year 2009 passed under the sign of failed attempts of selling the shipyard in Gdynia. The tender took place in May. At that moment it was still believed that all assets of the shipyard can be sold to one investor and continuation of ship production is possible.
The Stichting Particulier Fonds Greenrights has presented the interest in investment which was confirmed by the security deposit in the amount of PLN 30 million. However, the transaction has not been implemented. Another attempt was made at a yard sale in November. This time a number of tenders for different parts of the property were launched. Auction held via the Internet, did not meet with an interest of investors. Only insignificant part of assets put up for sale was sold, so in December another attempt was made. As a result of tendering procedures, Energomontaz company, purchased small dry dock, where assembling structures for the power industry is planned. Nauta shipyard in Gdynia also bought the shipbuilding area, where it intends to transfer its activities. Area currently occupied by the company is to be used for urban construction. A third investor, who purchased Gdynia Shipyard's assets is a private yard - Crist, which took over the hall to the fabrication of hulls.
During the successive failures on the sale of Gdynia Shipyard, Naval Shipyard in Gdynia faced severe financial problems. Board of directors began a program of collective redundancies and started negotiations with creditors, in which it sees an opportunity to regulate the growing debt.
New Year's gift
On the 31st of December Voivod of Pomerania gave Gdansk's authorities permission to build the last section of Route WZ from Kartuska street to the Tri-City Bypass. The tender for the construction will be announced in February 2010. Construction is to begin no later than in June. Deadline for completing the construction is set on May 2012. Two lanes, three junctions and the junction of ul. Otomińską are to be constructed as a part of the investment. It is also scheduled to lay a new road (North Kartuska) to facilitate access to the newly settled housings in this area of the city.
It wasn't so bad after all
The year 2009 began in an atmosphere of global
crisis. Forecasts developed for Pomerania foresaw a decline in
exports to EU countries, rise of unemployment and a significant
economic slowdown. Despite so many pessimistic scenarios, during
the last twelve months a number of investments (primarily
infrastructural) were launched in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Despite the crisis it was also possible to encourage foreign
investors to locate their businesses in the Tri-City..
